SEO in a Nutshell Part 2: Setting Up Your Tools

There are lots of articles out there about search engine optimization. However, few of them really break down each step of the process into simple, easy-to-understand steps that the average website owner can understand and incorporate into their SEO strategy. This article series is intended to do just this – “In a Nutshell.” This part specifically talks about ‘Setting Up Your Tools’.

 

Here at 90 Degree Design, we use google webmaster tools for our SEO campaigns. Google webmaster will increase traffic to your site by focusing on the technical side and less on the marketing of your business. In order to use Google webmaster tools, you have to have a google account. From there you can use Google search console to add your site, verify your site, add sitemaps, and monitor your SEO progress.

 

Step 1 – Create a google account

All you have to do is go to www.google.com and click on ‘+You’. This will take your through all of the steps of setting up your google account. By setting up an account you will be given a Google gmail address and you will be able to gain access to other Google applications (ex. Drive, docs, calendar, etc.)!

Step 2 – Set up a Webmaster Tools account

You will need to visit http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools  and use your Google account credentials to sign in. The next step will be to click ‘Add a Site’. From here you will enter your site’s URL that you want to manage. Google will want to verify your site to make sure it actually belongs to you. There are a couple of options you can use to verify your site and if you have have Google Analytics account that is usually the easiest route. We use the HTML file upload options here at 90 Degree Design, but that is what works best for us. You may find a different verification option to work better for you!

Step 3 – Add a Sitemap

It is extremely important to continuously monitor the progress of your site. We use the Google webmaster tools to understand our SEO progress and how to better improve our site throughout time. SEO is a constant and google search console can help you stay on top of your site. You can use it to check for crawl errors, broken links, viewing your index status, content keywords, search traffic, etc. Just remember that managing and monitoring your site is highly important for SEO and to always stay engaged.
