Every year, there’s a new list of “website design trends.” Some are worth paying attention to. Most are not. Because here’s the truth: A website doesn’t need to be trendy. It needs to be effective.
At 90 Degree Design, we look at trends a little differently. We’re less interested in what’s popular and more interested in what actually moves the needle. Here are a few trends that we think are worth considering and how to think about them strategically.
1. AI Isn’t the Trend. How You Use It Is.
AI has officially moved out of the “cool” category and into the “expected” category.
We’re seeing:
- AI-generated content
- Chat interfaces
- Personalization engines
But here’s the problem: Most of it feels… generic.
The opportunity isn’t to use AI. It’s to use AI in a way that still feels human.
The brands that win will be the ones that combine:
- AI efficiency
- Human perspective
- Clear brand voice
Because if your website looks and sounds like every one, it might as well be any one.
2. “Minimalism” Is Being Replaced by Personality
For years, clean and minimal ruled the web. And while clarity still matters, we’re seeing a shift: Brands are starting to loosen up.
More:
- Bold headlines
- Unexpected layouts
- Playful interactions
- Stronger, more authentic points of view
Why?
Because users don’t remember “clean.” They remember different.
The goal isn’t to be minimal.
The goal is to be memorable.
3. Motion & Interaction (Used With Restraint)
Animation isn’t new—but how it’s being used is evolving.
Done well, motion:
- Guides attention
- Reinforces hierarchy
- Improves user flow
Done poorly, it:
- Slows your site down
- Distracts from your message
- Hurts conversion
We’ve all seen those sites where everything moves… and none of it helps.
The takeaway: Motion should support the experience—not become the experience.
4. Strategy > Trends (Always)
This one isn’t a trend—but it’s the most important point on this list. We see it all the time.
Businesses chasing trends without asking a simple question:
Does this actually serve our audience?
Because trends come and go.
But clarity, usability, and strong messaging don’t.
Before implementing any trend, ask:
- Does this improve the user experience?
- Does it align with our brand?
- Does it help us convert?
If the answer is no, just skip it.
The Wrap-Up
Trends are a great source of inspiration—but they’re not a strategy.
The best websites aren’t the trendiest ones. They’re the ones that are:
- Clear
- Intentional
- Built around real user behavior
If you’re thinking about updating your website, start there.
Everything else is just decoration.
